Hung curd dip with garlic oil
Super quick and healthy dip that can be served with burger, fries, corn chips, veggie sticks and even relished on its own. It is that good!
My mother used to make this dip with fada ni khichdi, a broken wheat and lentil ‘risotto’ (if you can call it that!!) and I used to absolutely love it. It is my to-go dip for everything. Sometimes I would just sit with a big bowl of this dip and relish it spoon by spoon, even licking out the last bits remaining on the bowl. You can enjoy this dip with the homemade nacho/tortilla chips or the healthy sweet potato chips as well.
I find hung curd as an extremely versatile ingredient to have in the kitchen. Add tahini, lemon juice and garlic and you have a great dip to have your falafel with or add Mexican seasoning and chili powder to have with the burrito. It is a perfectly creamy base that adopts so well to any seasoning.

So, let’s get to making this fairly easy recipe that you can make it in less than 5 minutes.

Super quick and healthy dip that can be served with burger, fries, corn chips, veggie sticks and even relished on its own. It is that good!
Ingredients
- 1 cup hung curd
- 2 tsp ghee/oil
- A pinch of cumin seeds
- 1 garlic chopped finely
- 1 garlic mashed
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- ¼ tsp black salt
- Salt to taste
Method
- In a mixing bowl, combine hung curd, mashed garlic, black salt and regular salt.
- In a small pan, heat ghee or oil.
- Add cumin seeds and let it fry for 10 seconds.
- Place finely chopped garlic and fry till it turns red.
- Turn off the flame and let it cool down for 1 minute.
- Add red chili powder and add it immediately to the yogurt mix and give it a swirl.
- Enjoy it straightaway or chilled.
Notes
- Instead of hung curd/strained yogurt, you can use Greek yogurt and it works beautifully.
- Fry the cumin seeds for few seconds as they can taste bitter if fried for too long.
- Use kashmiri red chilli powder for the bright, red colour.
- Always add red chili powder to a slightly cooled down ghee/oil to maintain its colour. It also changes its flavour if added to hot oil.
