A perfect way to finish those overripe guavas in a sweet and spicy quick stir fry of guava and chilies under 15 minutes.
Looking for a recipe that will use up your overripe guavas? Look no further, this super quick and a yummy stir fry of overripe guava – riper the better! – and chilies can be made in minutes and its hits all the taste buds. Its spicy, its sweet, its tangy, basically it is delicious 🙂
A staple in Gujarati households, peru marcha nu shaak as it’s called is a typical style of cooking Gujarati food. Onions and garlic are not frequently used in this cuisine and putting jaggery in almost everything is a given.
Served with a roti or plain rice, it’s a complete meal or hike up the flavour by putting it in a wrap – I did mine with thepla 🙂 with coriander chutney and marinated onions, it won’t disappoint!

A perfect way to finish those overripe guavas in a sweet and spicy quick stir fry of guava and chilies under 15 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 big or 2 small ripe guavas
- 2 big red chilies (chili pepper)
- 1 tomato, grated
- Spices:
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tbsp red chilly powder
- 1 tbsp cumin coriander powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- Curry leaves 8-10
- 2 green chilies slit from the middle (optional)
- 2 tbsp jaggery powder
- 1 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
- Coriander for garnish
Method
- Prepare the guava by removing its seeds and cutting it in small cubes.
- In a pan, put oil on a medium flame.
- Add mustard seeds in the hot oil and let it crackle.
- Place asafoetida, curry leaves and green chilies slit from the middle and sauté it for one minute.
- Now add the grated tomato, red chilly powder, turmeric powder and cumin coriander powder.
- Combine guava with the tomato mix and cover it to cook for 5 minutes.
- Add chilies and jaggery and mix well. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Garnish with coriander and enjoy 🙂
Notes
- I have used red chilies that are used for pickling purpose. In case you don’t find them, you can substitute red chilies for half a capsicum
- You can increase or decrease the level of spiciness and the sweetness according to your liking.
